A custom property is a field you add to opportunities yourself, for anything the built-in fields do
not cover. Opportunity properties are managed at **Sales → Properties**, and are separate from the
properties on people and companies.

A property is collected on an opportunity only once it is attached to a pipeline or a stage. See
[Attaching properties to pipelines and stages](https://help.clockworkcrm.com/sales/properties#attaching-properties-to-pipelines-and-stages).

## The property list

The list shows every opportunity property, arranged in property groups. The group decides which
section a property appears in on the opportunity record and forms.

| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Click a group's name | Opens the group, to rename it |
| Click a property | Opens the property, to edit it |
| Drag a property | Moves it up or down its group, or into another group |
| Drag a group | Moves the group up or down |
| Bin icon on a property | Deletes the property, after you confirm |
| Bin icon on a group | Deletes the group, after you confirm. It appears only when the group holds no properties |
| **Add Property Group** | Opens the form for a new group |
| **Add Property** | Opens the form for a new property. It stays unavailable until at least one group exists |

The new order is saved as soon as you drop a property or group, and applies to every user.

## Adding a property group

1. Select **Add Property Group**.
2. Enter the **Property Group Name**, up to 100 characters. It is required.
3. Select **Save**.

## Adding a property

1. Select **Add Property**.
2. Fill in the property form, below.
3. Select **Save**.
4. Attach the property to a pipeline or a stage at **Sales → Pipelines**.

The property form is the same one used for contact properties:

| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| **Property Name** | The label users see on the record and the forms |
| **Help Text** | Shown to users when they point at the property on a form |
| **API Name** | The property's name in the API. Required, up to 100 characters, and must be unique |
| **Required** / **Not Required** | When set to **Required**, the property must have a value before an opportunity can be saved into a stage that uses it |
| **Property Type** | What kind of value the property holds |
| **Type Specific Fields** | Extra settings for some types, such as the options for a **Select** |
| **Property Group Details** | The group the property belongs to |

See [Custom properties](https://help.clockworkcrm.com/general/custom-properties#adding-a-property) for the limits on each
field and how the type settings work.

The property types are **Text**, **Multi Line**, **Number**, **Currency**, **Date**, **Email**,
**Phone**, **Url**, **Checkbox**, **Radio**, **Select**, **Multiple Selection**, **User**,
**Company** and **Person**. See [Property types](https://help.clockworkcrm.com/general/custom-properties#property-types) for what users
enter in each.

## Attaching properties to pipelines and stages

Defining a property makes it available. Attaching it to a pipeline or a stage decides where it is
collected. Each property can be attached once per pipeline: to the pipeline itself, or to one of
its stages.

| Attached to | Where it appears |
|---|---|
| **A pipeline** | On every opportunity in that pipeline, whatever stage it is in, under **Pipeline Properties** |
| **A stage** | When an opportunity reaches that stage, and at every later stage, in a section named after the stage |

Pipeline properties are chosen in the pipeline's **Properties** section, and stage properties with
the **Manage Properties** button next to each stage. See [Pipelines and stages](https://help.clockworkcrm.com/sales/pipelines).

A required property must be filled in before an opportunity can be added in, or moved into, a stage
that uses it. Moving an opportunity forward several stages at once asks for the properties of each
stage it passes.

## Where properties appear

Once attached, a property appears:

- on the **Add Opportunity** form, when the pipeline and stage are chosen
- on the opportunity record, where you click a value to change it
- on the **Move** and **Move Stage** forms
- in **Order By** on the board, for the pipeline's own properties, except **Multiple Selection**
  properties

Every property, attached or not, can also be used as a filter and a column in
**Sales → Advanced Search**.

## Deleting a property or a group

1. Point at the property or group and select the bin icon.
2. Confirm the deletion.

A deleted property is removed from the property list and can no longer be attached to a pipeline or
stage. A group can be deleted only when it is empty.
